A standard tank unit generally runs 8 to 12 years. Past that, the question stops being whether it will fail and becomes where it will be standing when it does. A unit in a finished basement or an upstairs closet is worth replacing on your schedule rather than on its own.
It comes down to what failed and how old the unit is. A thermostat, heating element, thermocouple or valve is a repair. Water weeping from the body of the tank is not — once the tank itself is leaking the unit is done, and no repair will hold. The plumber tells you which one you have before you spend anything.
